Web City

There once lived a character called Div. Just an ordinary little fellow. Not too specific, not too unusual. Nothing stood out about him. In fact, there were a lot of others like him. Quite a huge group, to be entirely honest. There always have to be Divs. Divs are the foundation of any respectable Web City.

But the thing is, any Div dreams of becoming something more. Something special. Specific. They have that constant itching feeling, like missing some semantics and trying to acquire a few more accessible features.

And so, having his little big dream in mind, our Div hero decided to start with the groundwork. And any groundwork always starts with getting the fundamentals sorted out. Thus, Div began to explore the hierarchical structure of the Web City he was living in. Because knowing who is below and who is above you is always important. Helps you keep your life views and perspectives tamed and mastered.

Thus, our little Div began his learning journey. Took first steps on a long and thorny road on the path to life dreams accomplishment and fulfillment. The road that takes many turns and opposite directions, creating a never-ending loop of questioning your decisions and choices.

Div visited Web City's school that was a part of the world wide work network of educational institutions (hence, it was sometimes called W3 schools). He used libraries to get access to all kinds of documentation. He even joined many public events and debates (that overflow him with all kinds of stacked facts and opposite opinions). He learned the structure of the society he was living in and was a part of. He learned about various classes of that society and their relations with each other.

There were head elements in that society. They were invisible to public, but defined a lot of important things. One would even say that things were quite meta. They also set the titles and provided description of what was happening in every Web City.

Apart from heads there were headers. One might say that there is no difference between them and the heads, but that is absolutely not so. Contrary to heads, headers were quite present. In fact, they were in charge of displaying major headings and providing the navigation throughout the Web City. They lived just above the main parts of the city, watching it all from up high.

In turn, these main parts were the centerpiece of the city. They included all kinds of sections and blocks (formed by Divs) where all the main activity took place.

Web cities were always buzzing with life. That life consisted of many things. Things like writing articles with many paragraphs, showing various commercials aside from the main sections, displaying all kinds of headings in their hierarchical order. And that is without mentioning numerous ordered and unordered lists providing links to many other places.

Div kept learning about all these things, these hierarchical elements, and correct order, and how to structure his little life around it. He couldn't decide what he wanted to be in life. Like any other Div, he felt like he could become anything. But that would leave him without any personality, without any distinct purpose in life. Like a brick that could be a part of any building, but not being able to stand out and show everyone around its uniqueness.

So many Divs inhabited the Web City. And, truth be told, they all had their role to play. The simple reality of life is that not everyone can become something unique, something specific. Sometimes you may realize that you are just a brick, forming the foundation of the society you are living in. And maybe that is not such a bad thing in the end.

After all, even Divs could have their own classes. Sometimes they could even be able to get an ID to get a sense of that uniqueness everyone was striving for. Classes and IDs, the attributes of so many Web City's inhabitants. They could style you, define your purpose and functions.

So, Div kept following his dreams. He continued his learning journey, persevered, and moved forward.

After many sleepless nights and sleepy mornings, he was able at last to get his own class. That was quite an achievement. Now he could live his life in style. His appearance changed and he started feeling like something a little bit more specific. Something that began to stand out. Something unique.

He was no longer just Div, he was different now. He stood out. He was proud of himself, of having this achievement in his pocket. But he also knew there was more work to be done. He had to persevere, had to move forward. That was just the first step. And when you make this first step, you instantly need to plan ahead. You need to keep moving. To catch the momentum. To achieve better results and reach new peaks.

And thus, Div, as proud as he was of his initial accomplishment, continued being humble, hard-working, and focused. He kept his grinding, continued his studies, worked more, slept less, and put all his personal life aside. The goal was worth the efforts, he felt it, was sure of it. And, following this ruthless routine, after some time, he managed to get himself an ID.

Now that was something. That was a thing that could make you really unique. Not just a class, the same as others might have. No, that was his personal identifier, the one that only he could have. Others could now access him directly, call him, reach him whenever he was needed. And he liked being needed, being useful, being capable of doing something others couldn't.

But that was not all. As always, reaching one more milestone only make you hungrier for reaching more. You feel like once you start succeeding, you should never stop. You should keep working hard, keep grinding, succeed more. The tireless run on the road to happiness has begun, and, to reach the finish line, you have to concentrate on running on that road and never stop. Because the finish line is far away, so you have to keep on running. And that is exactly what our Div felt, despite his freshly obtained class and ID. He wanted more, he wanted it fast, he wanted to never stop succeeding.

Through further hard work and dedication, Div obtained his title and defined his role (that specified its purpose). He gathered data and even created his own unique style that belonged to him alone. He learned to perform various actions just by a simple click. He even found out how to become hidden from time to time and could make his presence in the flow of Web City's life invisible (usually up until the point when someone called him).

Of course it all came at a price. Div felt quite draggable sometimes. He was now responsible of so many things, took care of so many events and changes. He was important. And being important usually puts a label on you. A label that says that you are irreplaceable and should be available at any given moment, at any part of the Web City, regardless of how many other things reference you.

So Div asked himself, what if he could focus. Like really focus very hard, concentrate on one thing. That would bring him to a whole new level. What if he no longer wanted to be Div. He was quite unique now, but that was possible because he simply took more responsibilities, more tasks to handle. But at the end of the day he was still a Div. And that bothered him.

He looked at all those other, specific elements of the Web City and kept wondering if he could ever become one of them. All those Headers and their Headings, those figures and marks. He wondered if someone coming from Divs world could become one of them.

It seemed impossible, like something that would require serious foundational changes after which you would no longer be yourself. If Div became, let's say, Heading. Not the most important Heading maybe, not the first or second one, but maybe starting from the lower ranks like sixth? Or a bit higher, like fifth? What would happen to Div? Would he still be himself in his core? The element of Web City, carving his way up. Or would his whole personality change, made him a completely different element?

He was a bit concerned, but that didn't stop him, didn't prevent him from exploring his options at least. From learning more and doing all he could to become better. To become something truly unique.

And thus, he kept his hard work, kept learning, exploring new things, discovering new possibilities, paying no attention to the track of time. His tireless grinding continued, he persevered, moved forward without looking back. It took time, it took efforts. There were days when he was ready to give up. There were days when he was thinking about doing something else. But he stubbornly continued his restless journey. He wanted to prove to the whole world and, first of all, to himself that he could succeed.

And then it happened. And, truth be told, there was nothing special about it. No celebration, no victory dance. No. One day, he just woke up and realized that he was no longer a simple Div. He was promoted. He became a Heading.

He wasn't even surprised, didn't feel anything special. He just realized that his position changed and now apparently he was performing new functions. But, at the same time, he was doing pretty much the same only under a different angle. But he succeeded. He changed his status. No longer just a Div, a Heading now. What's more, his tireless work brought him several levels up through all possible Headings ranks, so he even got higher than sixth or fifth.

He didn't dream of becoming the first Heading, the most important one. The one that was truly unique. The one that didn't have equals. Frankly, he was quite surprised he managed to become a Heading in general, and becoming the first one had never been among his plans and desires.

But then, come to think of it, now when he was one of the big league players, why not dreaming a little more. Why not doing a little more? Or not just more, but quite a lot in fact. Why not starting climbing up a little further?

Rank by rank, Div continued sculping his career, his path through Web City's elements life and their relationships with each other. He discovered the secret life of hidden styles and he even took a peak behind the curtain and saw what could truly change the whole flow of life in Web City. He saw the scripts that were running behind the scenes. He saw how they linked everything together and could remove or add any element wherever they wanted it to be.

That was a true moment of revelation. Apparently, there were more to it than meets the eye. Div always thought of Web City's hierarchical structure as a sole thing that existed, formed the whole society. But, in reality, this was just a facade, a skeleton that took care of the basic structure. Then, the hidden parts dressed it all up the way they liked it and were reorganizing any minor detail on a whim.

Div secretly visited the factories where all the scripts were made. He watched their complex work and interactions, the way they functioned and returned results. Sometimes they returned nothing, but still produced useful side effects. Sometimes they made errors, and sometimes they had no purpose at all, but still managed to exist and play some role. The role, without which, the others wouldn't be able to function properly for some unknown reason. All that quite often happened asynchronously, awaiting some results and promises to happen. Sometimes it did happen, sometimes it didn't and led to catching errors.

But, no matter what, the whole system kept running. It also kept growing, getting bigger and bigger, adding more parts to manage its work and daily life, to add new functionalities and improvements. It was a maze of all kinds of structures and parameters. To walk through that maze you really had to be an expert with countless years of experience. And even that wouldn't be enough.

Div quickly realized that sometimes, probably most of the time, you just have to accept the fact that no system is perfect, no solution is final, and no approach is the only one that could be used. Seeing all these hidden elements of Web City, he came to a conclusion, that sometimes being just a Div can be enough. He always wanted more, thought about becoming someone else, someone better, someone great. And yet, here he was, seemingly someone who at least partially achieved all that, but still his former self deep inside.

Maybe that's what he really wanted? Just being himself? A little element, like many others, just a tiny brick in the wall? Did he need to be more than just that? Being a Heading was nice, in a way, but it also narrowed him down, limited his functionalities, and he liked those extra functionalities he could have before. Was it the price of success? Leaving your past, where you could do everything you wanted, behind in exchange for a shiny new title that required only a certain amount of tasks to perform?

Standing at the top of his position, glancing down at his adjacent elements and those below him, Div finally slowed down. His mind was no longer jumping from one topic to another, from one task to the new one, from one goal to a bigger one. It felt... strange. Not good, not bad, just strange. Not having any new frontier to cross, no new ladder to climb. Just a field of uncertainty that you accept.

Div slowly turned around, walked towards the exit. On his way out, he took off his Heading hat and put it on the hanger near the door. And then he left, disappeared in the crowd of other Div outside his former office, he merged with them, completely indistinguishable, invisible, imperceptible.

And no one has ever seen him again, or known where he went.

But perhaps he was happy?
